The Annual Green Orgy: Earth Day

By Alan Caruba

On Earth Day we will have been engulfed by the avalanche of “Green” propaganda that preceded it, fills the day, and then continues relentlessly thereafter.

When I say “propaganda”, I am being polite. Much of the foundation of the environmental movement is pure lies, mind boggling distortions of questionable “science”, and a thin veneer for the entire purpose of environmentalism, the imposing of a one-world agenda for the enrichment of a few who dream of a monopolistic control of the world’s resources and its human work force.

It would be managed for the uber-wealthy—an unelected group of elites, selected “world leaders” and politicians, plus a vast diplomatic corps backed up by the coercive might of police and armies answering not to sovereign nations, but the “new world order” exemplified by the United Nations.

If this sounds like some huge conspiratorial theory, one need only read books like “Our Global Neighborhood: The Report of The Commission on Global Governance” (1995, Oxford University Press) a product of the United Nations in which the vast web of UN treaties, most of which are rooted in environmental agendas, is spelled out.

While Americans provide billions to the United Nations as its greatest source of funding, the UN has been busy turning out the Wetlands Convention, Convention on Ship Pollution, Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals, UN Law of the Sea, Vienna Convention on Ozone Layer, Biological Diversity Convention, and the Framework Convention on Climate Change, among many others.

This is the same United Nations that has yet to stop a single war since its founding after WWII, except through the intervention of U.S. military power. It has stood on the sidelines while we stopped North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in the 1950s, expressed concerns over our ill-fated Vietnam War, passed dozens of resolutions concerning the belligerence of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein who had waged war against Iran for eight years and then invaded Kuwait. Then it watched as the U.S. finally rid the world of this maniac.

These days it continues to dither over the genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region, much as it has with regard to others. On the international stage, it continues to blame tiny Israel for all the ills of the world while most of the other Middle East nations remain in the grip of monarchs and dictators, devoid of any democracy or freedom.

The real problems in the world are largely tied to poverty and the oppression and corruption that facilitate it, but the United Nations is mostly composed of the very nations responsible for poverty, racism, sexism, and other ancient ills of mankind. It is a useless global doppelganger.

On Earth Day you will hear all manner of claims that the Earth is in severe environmental danger due to the human population, but what you won’t hear or read about is the 2009 Index of Leading Environmental Indicators, an annual report by the Pacific Research Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. You won’t hear about the recovery of ecosystems in places like the Cuyahoga River—the one that literally caught fire in 1969—or Prince William Sound, the site of the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker spill.

This year’s report notes that no American or Western European city ranks among the top 50 cities in the world for air pollution. Wealthy nations pay attention to these problems. You won’t hear that, according to the U.S. Geological Survey sampling of drinking waters in 17 areas around the continental U.S., there was no or low presence of 258 different man-made chemicals. You won’t hear that stratospheric ozone—the good kind—appears to have reversed its long-term decline and is increasing over the U.S.

You won’t hear about these improvements because the U.S. press and media do not want you to hear about them and will not report them. As for the rest of the world, notably China and India, they are in a hurry to catch up with the success of the West. China keeps building coal-fired plants to provide the electricity necessary for an economy that must serve more than a billion people and India has launched itself on a program of nuclear power.

What you will hear is that the nations of the world must reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, 2030 or 2050 or “global warming” will destroy the Earth. Only there is NO global warming. The Earth has been in a cooling cycle for the past decade and it is likely to last for several more decades.

There is no reason whatever for the endless schemes of the environmental organizations to demand that various industries reduce their “carbon footprint.”

An example of these idiotic proposals was announced by the Book Industry Environmental Council. Its goal is the reduction of the U.S. book industry’s “greenhouse gas emissions 20% by 2020 with the intent of achieving an 80% reduction by 2050.”

This ignores the fact that thousands of trees have to be cut down and ground into paper pulp for the endless production of largely idiotic books regurgitating nonsense about dieting while at the same time printing dozens more cookbooks. I have reviewed books for nearly fifty years and have seen enough rubbish published in every single year to fill scores of landfills.

Earth Day is a lie from start to finish.

Worse yet, it frightens small children into believing they are harming the Earth and it seeks to enslave adults into participating in programs that deprive them of a world that benefits from anything made from plastic, a derivative of oil, and many of the beneficial chemicals that protect them from the diseases spread by insect and rodent pests, and the mobility that our cars and trucks provide.

It seeks to limit access to more and more land and ocean areas, removing their vital resources of coal, oil, and natural gas from use by a human population that depends on the energy they generate.

The Earth Day orgy of lies will come and go, but the battle with this insidious movement, directed from the citadel of hatred called the United Nations, goes on.

  1. To help us celebrate Earth Day, here are some quotes from one of my favorite optimists, Paul Ehrlich, who was around to celebrate the first Earth Day in 1970!

The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines. Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. Population control is the only answer. -Paul Ehrlich in The Population Bomb (1968)

I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000. -- Paul Ehrlich, 1969

In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish. -- Paul Ehrlich, Earth Day 1970

  2. As usual Alan you hit the nail on the head, what can I say but thanks.

You also wont hear that from 18955 to present, scientist alternated in predicting the coming ice age, and global warming, in 20-30 year cycles.

1895 to mid 1920s coming ice age
late 1920 to early 1950s global warming
mid 1950s to late 1970s coming ice age
now global warming again,,,but earth cooling for 10 yrs..in another 10-15 yrs a prediction of a coming ice age...

  3. Sorry to take up so much of your column space Alan but the thought of Earth Day compels me to rant.

I was never pro Civil War (the Confederacy was never armed with much more than hubris anyway), although I would now support a peaceful separation of the US and as far as I am concerned the Green Mob could have the entire West Coast if they wanted it.

They could have Obama as their President, Al Gore could be Secretary General of the Communist Party for them, and the entire Obama cabinet could be moved to Sacramento.

They could pass all the stinking idiot lunatic regulations they wanted and enslave a parasitic population in any manner they saw fit. They would quickly become a foreign aid case and I would gladly pay to keep them away.

Meanwhile the rest of the country, where human beings live, would remove all regulatory action harmful to capitalism and growth – and the Age of Enlightenment would be reborn.

If I had it my way, the only “regulation” would be – don’t mention “regulation” or you can go live in the California utopia.

PS Move the UN building to San Francisco while you’re at it

  4. I find it almost impossible to believe that Capitol Hill will pull back, ie, admit they are wrong, from the Climate Change hoax.
Too many Elites are making too many green-backs on the back of 'green' policies to back down in the face of mere scientific truths and proofs.
The bandwagon of the day is a 'green-hole' sucking in ever more lies and dollars to fulfill the UN's declared intent to impose a global governance and a global currency. The powerful and hyper- wealthy world financiers have this methodology in hand. It is they who dictate the world's finances.
This will be based not on goods and services that have sustained the system since trading began, but on the environment and, principally, on the Cap and Trade system of CO2 'reduction'.
In the Brave New World of Sustainable Development (ST) we will see liberty and free choice dumped in favour of 'consensus' imposed by unelected civic leaders.
The civic control by language and key phrasology is getting into the driving seat - all driven by the UN's Agenda 21 or ST by its everyday name. It dictates every aspect of civic and personal life in every corner of the country - every country - and is the official policy in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc, etc.
The main sections of ST are land use, education, and that evil of population control, eugenics. Of course, eugenics is an old story with millions of dead already testifying behind it, cropping up in various guises throughout the 20th century - and we know the Greens don't like people.
Perhaps they would like to reduce the surplus population to a rendition of Soylent Green (1973 tech-noir movie - remember that?)to feed the starving millions; no food because the Greens 'block-out the sun' attempt at geoengineering has blown-up in their faces.
The key green strategy of SD is all about what you cannot have and what they will take from you. It is to be found in the UN's Biodiversity Assesment Report. It is so frightening in its scope as to be unbelievable to an as yet relatively free society.
This is what that lovable toad, Maurice Strong, had to say about our freedoms at the 1992 UN Rio Earth Summit:
".....Current life-styles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class - involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work air conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable".
    A real Mr Nice-guy!
At this time this is underway in all manner of green projects, environment protection and public-private partnerships all tied up in green ribbon and lovable phrases. This is huge and crosses all party lines and must be the cause for many more tea-parties.
Paradoxically, the sentimentality of soppy Earth Day rhetoric is just another arrow in the their quiver to dismantle our society.

  5. Interesting to hear so much talk of secession since Obama has been elected, Texas, your thoughts and others I have read.

  6. Clive, so much of what passes for environmentalism is really about money. There are endless businesses whose products now have "eco" attached to them, there are millions in grants from foundations to the leading organizations, there are reputations to be burnished by making fantastic, apocalyptic claims. And then, as you note, the intoxication of power over other people's lives. It is a fulltime obsession here in the USA to pass laws controlling the personal choices people used to take for granted.

  7. I watched the History Channel last night and I'd worry more about Yellowstone erupting if I was worried about non-existant global warming. Actually in a way it would be good as then it would solve at least two problems at the same time. All the idiots on the west coast and the illegal aliens pouring over the boarders.
Also a magic lightning bolt would work wonders for certain other problems that are constantly in the news and on the internet.

  8. Yes, Alan, I fear for the world that my children will experience by the time they get to my age in 50 or so years time. This eco stranglehold seems almost irrevocable at this time

  11. In 1936, I believe it was, a man by the name of Thomas Howard was the president of the Socialist party here in the US. After losing in that election, he wrote something so prophetic that people should be made aware of it today. Now I will not quote him as I no longer have the quote, but I will paraphrase as closely as I can to what he said. He said something to the effect of, the American people will never let socialists take over their country, but under the label of liberalism, all of the ideas of Socialism will be advanced so that one day the American people will wake up and they will be Socialists without knowing how it came about. Looks to me like the day is upon us.
Pope Leo XIII wrote about the dangers of Socialism in Rerum Novarum and therein he roundly condemned it. It is interesting to see how prophetic both these men were, one because he was looking for the fall of the US and Western society and the other because he was looking for the goodness in the world to win out.

  12. Valverde, you were close. The man's name was Norman Thomas and he did indeed say pretty much what you noted. The liberals have now delivered us to the point where we have a President that wants to take over the banks, the auto companies, and who knows what's next.
