Closing Ranks, Winning the Election

By Alan Caruba

I am surely not breaking any new ground by suggesting it is time for Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich to end their primary campaigns and to urge that the Republican Party close ranks behind Mitt Romney.

This needs to be said by anyone and everyone who wants to see Obama defeated in November.

It would be an act of patriotism for both men, Santorum and Gingrich, to end their campaigns. I make no mention of Ron Paul because he was always a sideshow.

In this week’s column, Ann Coulter spells out why Santorum is hardly worthy of support.

“Meanwhile, when he was in Congress, Santorum wouldn't even vote to eliminate federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. Santorum supported all sorts of big-government spending plans -- No Child Left Behind, prescription drug coverage for seniors and the "bridge to nowhere."

But you'd think we would at least have Santorum's vote against federal funding for pornographers and deviants. Alas, no.

The NEA, you will recall, uses federal taxpayer money to subsidize crucifixes submerged in urine, photos of bullwhips up a man's derriere, poems celebrating the Central Park jogger's rapists, photos of amputated human genitalia, vomit, mutilated corpses and dead fetuses. (And that was just the children's wing of the museum!)

But Rick Santorum voted against cutting funding for the NEA every time a vote was taken both as a representative and a senator -- in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997 and 1998. These weren't accidental votes. Each one was deemed a key conservative vote on which members of Congress would be graded by the American Conservative Union.”

I have long been on record in my support of Mitt Romney and my view that Newt is unqualified for as long a list of reasons as Coulter offers regarding Santorum.

Because they failed to receive the support of voters and secure funding, Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry, and Tim Pawlenty dropped out of the race what seems like an age ago.

Santorum continues and, in doing so, is saying things that make no sense even to those barely paying any attention to him at this point. He has never been in serious contention even in the few states where he has been credited with a win. The 2012 election will be won on the basis of economic, not social issues.

Newt’s percentages have been dismal, but Newt continues because he loves the spotlight and has a single deep-pockets financial backer that allows him to fly around recommending Moon colonies and other fanciful notions.

It is March 2012 and Republicans need to coalesce behind a single candidate, donate to him and the Party, volunteer, and do all the things necessary to defeat Obama. Otherwise, four years from now, if Obama is still President, he will be presiding over a nation whose exceptionalism, economy, and world power status will be a thing of the past.

At this point, absent some startling new incident in Republican-land, Mitt Romney probably has the Republican nomination sewed up. Which means Obama will get a second term after all. America is doomed...

Schism: I only hope there aren't more voters like you have ignore some glaring obvious facts. Obama is a repeat of Jimmy Carter and he's toast. I could run for president and beat him.

I agree completely, Alan, there is no reason to continue to try and resuscitate dead horses.

Mitt would not have been the candidate I would have chosen, but he is the Republican who we have, and it is now the time for us to join together, so Mitt can spend his campaign money on taking the attack to Obama.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Alan - Ann Coulter is the last person you should be quoting! She is no longer respected in the Conservative community after all her back-flips and obvious RINO qualities. Romney will take it and I sincerely hope that America votes for him as America can't afford another 4 more years of Obama and his Czar's.

Hi Schism,

Some of us, in what used to be called The West, will declare The United States of America a hostile nation if Obama and his cabel are elected ever again.

Let go of your soft balls and get back to Grid Iron.

I agree...My main man the Rickster jumped the shark when he said that Romney is the same as Obama.

As is well known, the person worse than Obama as president would be Van Jones, the American Lenin.

I have a new campaign slogan for Romney, "Vote for RINO Romney: it's important!"

If the country wants a clear-eyed, rational and reasonable President, Mitt Romney will win.

If people like Schism continue to spread the disease of hopeless thinking, the country is doomed anyway. If you can't say something nice and reasonable from this point on, I recommend you not say anything, and practice your deepest faith in the quiet of your own mind (because if it is a negative faith, it cannot do anyone else any good).

There is no way Santorum can win the nomination much less the presidential election. The biggest empty suit in Washington is Sen. Bob Casey and Santorum couldn't even beat him when they fought over Spector's seat. I held my nose and voted for Santorum then because he was the lesser of the two evils.

You are absolutely correct, Alan, in that the wannabees need to face reality, stop playing spoiler, and get out. It's time for a full court press and all out assult on Obama and his pathetic excuse for leadership.

Newt can spend the money his deep pockets friend has to take a spaceship ride and he can be the 'man in the moon'. Rick can go back to western PA, Mitt can go on to become President, and we can all live happily everafter.

I am not into cults of personality.

I really and truly have no interest in seeing Obama defeated.

I AM INTERESTED IN SEEING THE PROGRESSIVE-LIBERAL-MARSIST POLICIES IN PLACE REPEALED.

I don't see any candidates willing to do that.

Alan Caruba said...

@Larry: That's not the way politics works. Obama is the center from which policies become legislation.

Thank you, Angus. I am pretty sure I don't want the job.

I don't like Romney, you know it too Alan..

That said; Santorum has talked himself out of a supporter in me, I still don't LIKE Romney, but by God I have got to support him regardless, I think he's our last best chance.

Yeah. We will be bunches better off under Obamneycare than we are now.

Bunches.

Whether he wins, or whether he loses will certainly determine whether the Oval Office get new curtains or not.

I wonder if it will have an effect on how fast we have to learn to speak Arabic.

I do understand the center thing.

And I am not interested in it.

I am interested only in the legislation (actually, any more, it is the Executive Orders and less formal runarounds) that comes out of the center that worries me.
