Regulate! Regulate! Regulate!

With what is happening, there will soon be no choice but to go "John Galt". No one will be able to produce anything let alone do the innovation necessary to dig ourselves out of the abyss into which we plummeting.

It takes freedom for the mind to be effective. It takes capital to perform the long range thinking and action that will be required. It takes a government totally engaged in protecting that freedom and the right to ownership of that capital. The freedom is all but gone. The capital has been all but consumed. The government is the primary violator of individual rights. Soon there will be nothing except non-productive consumers with nothing to consume but each other.

As always, the ultimate end of despots of any type is the exhaustion of wealth to steal and victims to sacrifice. Their speeches, wishes, intentions, commands, edicts, guns, and undying belief in absolute power cannot change that fact.

Who is John Galt? He is the stark reality that a war against reality cannot be won on any terms. He is anyone who recognizes that fact and removes the products of his mind from the service to that war.

Right now about all we can HOPE for is that the 2010 election will see a CHANGE in type of politicians we send to Washington. Politicians who have the guts to return the government to its only legitimate role of protecting individual rights.

Alan:

The cartoon posted speaks volumes of wisdom about the current political situation in this country and is an excellent advertisement for Ayn Rand's novel ATLAS SHRUGGED, which richly illustrates where socialist leadership ends - In a train wreck of an economy reduced to horse drawn transport and famine.

My wife and I have SERIOUSLY discussed selling everything we have, buying a motor home of some sort, and pulling out of Ohio. Here's what we're facing if we stay put...

Ohio's Atty General has refused to join the other states in fighting Obamacare, so as we approach retirement, the inevitable increase in taxes and the erosion of the quality of care will hit us hard...

Skyrocketing unemployment will make finding supplemental income, even part time jobs, difficult...

Huge increases in income and Social Security taxes on investment income will be levied against the people like us that they consider "rich", which amounts to a PENALTY for planning for our future...

Steep increases in property taxes, as our real income falls, making it more difficult to remain on our homestead as we grow older...

Proposed new taxes on every form of energy, making it impossible to avoid them, even if all we do is stay home, watch TV, and try to stay warm...

Proposed efficiency and environmental restrictions on home sales that will make selling an older home difficult, if not impossible for a lot of people...

And the big one ... runaway inflation, reducing the value of whatever we have managed to save as America's debt balloons and our creditors lose faith in our ability to manage it.

So, call me crazy, but selling now and going "John Galt" in a warmer climate somewhere is beginning to make a lot of sense. The price for waiting may be getting trapped in an economy where there are no jobs, oppressive taxes, and no way to sell out and leave, even if we wanted to. We could easily wind up watching everything we've worked for over our entire lives evaporate as this administration "redistributes" our assets one by one ...

Whatever happened to the "American Dream"?

Guy, I have thought of the same thing. I'm already retired, but what you are considering sounds more and more attractive. Imagine having no permanent roots! If you don't like where you are, just move.

Texas is one of the states fighting Obozocare, and sounds pretty attractive in other ways, government wise. For example, the state legislature only meets every 2 years, so only half as much damage can be done.

Texas is also a right to carry state, and a shall issue state, if you care about such things. It could be for this reason that Texans are generally very polite.

If things continue to deteriorate Perhaps Texas will once again become the Republic of Texas.

Good luck to you and your wife, whatever you decide to do.
